Do you disconnect?

Through the holiday weekend, I noticed that Mark Evans wrote about blogging blindly, unable to stay connected to his usual on-line news sources.

When I get away from the city, I keep my Blackberry and broadband internet close to me. Some would ask if that means I don't ever really get away.

I was out on our boat yesterday and checked an incoming message when one of the other passengers commented "that's why I'm glad that I don't have one of those yet."

My response was that my mobile internet is what enables me to spend as much time away as I do. In the past, I couldn't conceive of being away for weeks at a time.

How do you get away?

Does being tethered enable you to be more relaxed, or would you rather toss it in the lake?

Update [August 5, 11:20 am]
I noticed an article that says Delta Airlines will be equipping its entire domestic fleet with in-flight WiFi. Something special in the air.

I'm afraid I do. Totally. When I am on holiday, I turn off the emails to the blackberry and use it as a straight phone only.

I go through vibration withdrawal for the first couple of days and then after that, I wonder what that hunk of plastic and metal is attached to my belt.

It's a nice to experience that feeling at least once a year, to remind me that there is another way to live.

Curious, do you really have more time away when you never disconnect? I would suggest that while your in your boat checking emails your not with the people in the boat, physically yes, mentally your with the Blackberry.. I stop email at 6pm M-F and all S&S.. When I am with my family or friends I want to focus on them and focus on work when its time to work.

I felt the same way and resisted getting a blackberry for the longest time. But I agree with your comment - I am able to bring nothing but my phone and stay in touch with clients, allowing me to travel as much as I want.

During one week long trip I simply sent a couple e-mails and drummed up enough business to pay for the vacation.

To be honest if you're an entrepreneur, blackberry or not, you're still thinking about your business no matter where you are. It's kind of a way of life in itself.
