More fibre in Verizon's diet

While Bell Canada has its own satellite service to deliver TV, there is still a race for interactive service speeds. With Videotron's 100Mbps service trial announced this week, the telcos are racing to catch up to the cable companies.
So far, Verizon is the only major North American carrier to commit to as high a fibre content in its diet - uniquely positioning it to surpass the cable speeds demonstrated last week by Videotron. Do the capital markets have the appetite to fund any others?

What I am curious about, is will the government allow for more competition in the Telecoms industry and the communications backbone altogether. I believe that Bell would be a natural to convert to Fibre-optics but as you said, with its satelites this will not be any time soom. I think that TV and movie downloads in the next 5 years will be the force that will push our telecoms to upgrade their networks.
the kicker of course is that in an area fed by an aerial drop the conversion isn't all that bad (5 hrs per install, us Canadians could do it 3)When you get into established areas that are fed with underground cables then the real work really happens. I can imagine approaching those homeowners and explaining that a contractor is going to push or trench a cable around their pools, patios, garages and maybe place a wonderful looking pedastel in their front or back yard.....
Or they could just place a bunch of new poles down the front street...
