Approaching wireless warp speed, captain

Today, Rogers announced further speed enhancements to its HSPA network, the first carrier in North America to begin the conversion to 7.2 Mbps data transport on its wireless network, with trials beginning in Montreal and Brampton.
Rogers current HSPA capability, running at up to 3.6 Mbps, is already available in the top 25 markets in Canada, representing about 60% of the population.
Fewer than 1% of the world's carriers have begun to trial this doubled speed capability.
In today's press release announcing the 7.2 Mbps service, Rogers Wireless president Rob Bruce said:
The consumer appetite for mobile applications is undeniable in Canada and around the world. The data speeds achieved in this trial will enable Rogers to meet our customers’ needs with the most advanced, innovative services today and in the future.Rogers has spent $500M in the past two years in upgrades to its wireless network. Tuesday's National Post carried a story about a report from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association that forecasts mobile data usage to be on the verge of explosive growth:
With wireless service providers reporting data growth rates exceeding 50% per quarter, CWTA expects spending to triple to more than $3 billion in the next three years as Canadians increase their demand for non-voice wireless services such as e-mail, social networking, Web browsing, music downloads, mobile television, satellite radio and text, multimedia and instant messaging. With Rogers launch of 7.2 Mbps service, mobile wireless will now be able to deliver the kinds of speeds that consumers are used to experiencing from wireline DSL and cable modem connectivity. What is the impact on demand for more spectrum?

So now Rogers will be a world leader in both mobile data speeds and mobile data costs. Great. Someone call me when I can get a data plan from Rogers that is cost equivalent with a plan I can get in, say, Lithuania.
Then I might be convinced to get a Blackberry or other "smartphone".
Until then monthly bill payments make this pie-in-the-sky for all but the wealthy or corporate users.

Actually, Lithuanis doesn't have these speeds. Oh, and they don't have Blackberry's yet either.

When I chose Lithuania it was supposed to be, believe or not, tongue-in-cheek. But just for fun, let's look at the numbers:
No Blackberry. True, but the full spectrum of HTC offerings including the S620 crackberry knockoff at about $560. In the ballpark with Canadian offerings.
A little trouble finding data plans for smartphones since not all pages are in English. Nonetheless, we can get unlimited Internet access on any regular WAP handset that supports it for 7 Litas per month or about $2.80 CAD. Rogers offers 5MB of internet access for $5 CAD per month or 10MB for $10 CAD per month. Any usage over this limit goes to 3 CENTS PER KB!

bite also offers unlimited mobile data access using a PC card via Vodaphone at 80 Litas per month, or about $32 CAD per month.
Rogers offers 1 GB per month at $65 per month with a charge of $1 PER MB BEYOND THIS LIMIT!!
bite also reports speeds of "up to 7.2 Mb/s" depending upon the hardware that you have. Average download speed is 2.8 Mb/s.
Rogers EDGE network offers "speeds up to 3x faster than dial-up"!!

Now take a look at the Blackberry data plans at Rogers. It's laughable.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll take the Lithuanian speeds and prices!
